Character

Name: Rachel Drake aka The Stinger
Canon: OC
Canon point: After defeating Executive Order
Age: 18

Canon history: Rachel comes from a world pretty much like ours except that superpowers exist - though they tend to be acquired by accidents or chance encounters, not inborn. In general, most superheroes who can maintain a "hero identity" and a "mundane identity", if only to avoid unwanted publicity while trying to live their day to day lives. Plus, masks and costumes are cool and create an easily identifiable image. In North America, superheroes are required to either work for S.A.B.E.R., the premiere organization of superheroes worldwide, or maintain an independent licence, though enforcement is spotty, especially in places where the local government doesn't have a hero of their own to bring an unlicensed hero in. S.A.B.E.R. is willing to assist, but they bill the locality, and sometimes, if an unlicensed hero isn't doing too much harm it's better to just let them do. Pretty much everyone carries insurance to cover damage or injury caused by super-powered fights. Dimension hopping is a thing that is known, but very hard to do. Time travel and parallel timelines are also known to exist. Basically, assume comic book metaphysics.

History: Rachel lived a pretty normal childhood - the only child of two middle class parents, she grew up in Northern California. She went to school, had a decent number of friends, got decent enough grades, nothing really to stand out. Oh sure, she was fascinated by superheroes, maybe a bit more than many of her classmates. Okay, a lot more than many of her classmates. For most them, superheroes were just... there. Part of the world, like policemen, or EMTs. It wasn't like you could end up as one unless you had some sort of lucky accident, and being too fascinated with them was something that most of Rachel's peers considered a phase they'd grown out of in elementary school. But she was never able to shake the fascination. She collected books written by superheroes, and always paid attention when superheroes or villains made the news. She was self-conscious about it, but never enough to actually give up on her hobby.

Then, towards the end of her Junior year of high school, several things happened in quick succession. First, her father was laid off from his job as a project manager. Her mother had been dealing with reduced hours at her job already, so both of them were hunting for new jobs. Then, while hanging out outside one day, Rachel was stung by a wasp that had somehow gotten infused with radioactivity. She spent two days sick with a fever, but the doctors said that she would have no lasting effects from the sting. But she started itching on her forearms, and a week later discovered that she could extend thin, sharp bone spurs from both of her wrists. She was going to tell her parents, but they were so stressed about their work situations that she didn't want to bother them, even when she also discovered she could now command wasps and bees to do her bidding.

Rachel was never one to keep secrets, especially from her parents though, and once she got a handle on her new powers (and stopped internally squeeing about how she was totally a superhero now!), she had every intention of telling them. But then both her parents got hired by the same company. Which seemed awesome, but something about it raised Rachel's suspicions, especially when this new job involved a relocation to Yellowknife, in the Northwest Territories, Canada. She did some research, and while she couldn't discover much, she did discover that the organization they would be working for was associated with a supervillain known as Executive Order. Unsure what to do, she continued keeping her powers secret.

The move to Yellowknife was... well, not great. It was cold and miserable most of the time, and the school she went to was super small. But her parents seemed happy with their jobs, and they didn't seem to have to do anything particularly villainous as far as Rachel could see, so she kept her complaints to the typical 'teenager forced to move for their last year of high school' things. The one good thing was that she discovered that even though Yellowknife was super remote, there was an office of the superhero organization known as S.A.B.E.R. there. Even with her parents working for a villain, she really wanted to be a superhero, so she made herself a costume, complete with a full face mask, and sent in an application. She was accepted as a S.A.B.E.R. intern and put in touch with two other local superheroes, Split-Second and Hugh. Together they took down a minor villain with only some property damage, and formed a team.

They were... somewhat successful. Okay, in fairness, they tended to succeed only by luck and sometimes massive property damage, but they discovered there were way more supervillains in the area than S.A.B.E.R. was aware of. The team grew with two more members, and Rachel - who went by The Stinger with her teammates - thought things were going pretty well. She was getting to be an actual superhero, if not always an effective one, and even managing to balance it with having a mundane life. But then, a few weeks before her high school graduation her parents told her they'd be gone for a few days for a work-related thing. Realizing that a work-related thing probably meant supervillainy was afoot, she got her team together to hopefully stop whatever Executive Order was planning.

It was a tough battle, but they managed to subdue Executive Order. During the fight, Rachel's identity was revealed to her parents. Instead of being the disaster she'd feared, she was able to convince them to leave off working for Executive Order (especially since he'd been apprehended), and they accepted her desire to be a superhero. For her role in the take down of Executive Order, she was promoted within S.A.B.E.R. to a full agent and she and her parents were to move to Japan. But then she ended up at Diatu Magicademy instead.

CRAU History: N/A

Personality:
* Proactive: Rachel is not going to sit around and dither when there's something that needs doing. Especially when it's something where innocent and/or 'normal' people could get hurt. Best to jump right in. Planning can be done on the fly.

* Organized: Balancing school, chores, an active social life, and being a superhero isn't easy, especially when you can't tell your parents about the superhero part. But Rachel's managed it, if only by very carefully scheduling pretty much everything. She doesn't consider herself an overachiever - she doesn't need to be the best at anything, but she is very good at keeping a lot of balls in the air at once.

* Convincing: Or, to put it another way, very good at fast-talking bullshit. It might not be the most heroic of traits, but Rachel's had to be very good at lying to both friends and family to cover for her superheroing. She's especially good at knowing what adults want to hear and finding a way to say it without technically lying.

* Insecure: For all that she's very good at holding everything together, Rachel's still very worried that she's not doing things right. Being a superhero looked so easy on TV and in the books, and it's been way harder in real life. She's pretty sure she's always doing something wrong and worse, she doesn't know what she's doing wrong.

* Cheerleader: She may be uncertain about herself, but she's very good at supporting and encouraging other people. She's very good at recognizing other peoples' strengths and she genuinely wants people she considers her friends and teammates to succeed.

CRAU Personality: CRAUs only: n/a

Always Keep In Mind: Rachel really, really wants to be seen as a hero of some sort. Or at the very least as a role model.

Questions: Write an IC answer to the following questions:

What do you want to study at Diatu Magicademy?
Oh, I couldn't decide right now! Magic's one of those things I thought only existed in fiction, so I want to know at least a little bit of everything! Though I have to admit, Discovery magic seems pretty neat.

If you knew you could go back to the moment you left, would you leave immediately or continue your studies for a while?
Well... I don't know. Like, I do want to get back to my parents, and my new job and everything, but if I'd be going back to the exact moment I left they'd never know I'd been gone. And maybe some of the stuff I learn here could be helpful back there... I don't suppose the ability to do magic would come back with me though... I guess I'd probably stay at least a little bit.

If your enemy was at Diatu Magicademy, how would you react?
Oh, ah... [nervous laughter] Which enemy? I've kinda made quite a few. But if we're talking generally, I guess I'd wait and see what they did. If they continued their evil ways, I'd try to stop them of course. Not, like, lethally or anything, at least if possible. But if they like, reconsidered their past and decided to become decent students, then that'd be all right. I'd keep an eye on them though. Just in case.

When is it acceptable to resolve a dispute by force?
When you're protecting other people, for sure. Otherwise, well, there's levels of force. Sometimes you gotta put the smack down on someone to get them to see sense and keep them from hurting more people.

What should the supreme goal of any wizard be?
To help people I guess? I mean, I think that's what the supreme goal of a superhero should be, and I guess wizards are sorta like superheroes.
